Seven of Swords

When I started learning to read Tarot, it was with the Sacred Circle deck by Anna Franklin and Paul Mason, and the primary keyword they chose to go with the card is

“Diplomacy.”

Franklin and Mason advise tact and diplomacy in dealing with situations if this card appears. In essence, to choose your words wisely in order to convey the illusion you wish to be believed. This scene from the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens reminds me of the Seven of Swords because it’s like Diplomacy Run Amuck!

Poor Joe Gargery is out of his element in this scene, and copes the only way he knows how, which is to fling every high sounding word and phrase he can think of around to use a lot of words to say very little real content. Kind of like the Dark Side of Writing. Joe is also trying to hide that he feels inadequate to the task at hand … like an animal puffing itself up to appear larger than it really is when it’s threatened. That’s where the tie to the traditional meaning of this card is – to

Deception

and

Acting Strategically.

And now for the Seen of Swords scene:

Sacred Circle Tarot by Anna Franklin and Paul Mason

‘You are the husband,’ repeated Miss Havisham, ‘of the sister of this boy?’

It was very aggravating; but, throughout the interview Joe persisted in addressing Me instead of Miss Havisham.

‘Which I meantersay, Pip,’ Joe now observed in a manner that was at once expressive of forcible argumentation, strict confidence, and great politeness, ‘as I hup and married your sister, and I were at the time what you might call (if you was anyways inclined) a single man.’

‘Well!’ said Miss Havisham. ‘And you have reared the boy, with the intention of taking him for your apprentice; is that so, Mr. Gargery?’

‘You know, Pip,’ replied Joe, ‘as you and me were ever friends, and it were looked for’ard to betwixt us, as being calc’lated to lead to larks. Not but what, Pip, if you had ever
made objections to the business – such as its being open to black and sut, or such-like – not but what they would have been attended to, don’t you see?’

‘Has the boy,’ said Miss Havisham, ‘ever made any objection? Does he like the trade?’

‘Which it is well beknown to yourself, Pip,’ returned Joe, strengthening his former mixture of argumentation, confidence, and politeness, ‘that it were the wish of your own
hart.’ (I saw the idea suddenly break upon him that he would adapt his epitaph to the occasion, before he went on to say) ‘And there weren’t no objection on your part, and
Pip it were the great wish of your heart!’

It was quite in vain for me to endeavour to make him sensible that he ought to speak to Miss Havisham. The more I made faces and gestures to him to do it, the more confidential, argumentative, and polite, he persisted in being to Me.

‘Have you brought his indentures with you?’ asked Miss Havisham.

‘Well, Pip, you know,’ replied Joe, as if that were a little unreasonable, ‘you yourself see me put ‘em in my ‘at, and therefore you know as they are here.’ With which he took them out, and gave them, not to Miss Havisham, but to me.  I am afraid I was ashamed of the dear good fellow – I know I was ashamed of him – when I saw that Estella stood at the back of Miss Havisham’s chair, and that her eyes laughed mischievously. I took the indentures out of his hand and gave them to Miss Havisham.

‘You expected,’ said Miss Havisham, as she looked them over, ‘no premium with the boy?’

‘Joe!’ I remonstrated; for he made no reply at all. ‘Why don’t you answer—‘

‘Pip,’ returned Joe, cutting me short as if he were hurt, ‘which I meantersay that were not a question requiring a answer betwixt yourself and me, and which you know the answer to be full well No. You know it to be No, Pip, and wherefore should I say it?’

Miss Havisham glanced at him as if she understood what he really was, better than I had thought possible, seeing what he was there; and took up a little bag from the table beside her.

‘Pip has earned a premium here,’ she said, ‘and here it is. There are five-and-twenty guineas in this bag. Give it to your master, Pip.’

As if he were absolutely out of his mind with the wonder awakened in him by her strange figure and the strange room, Joe, even at this pass, persisted in addressing me.

‘This is wery liberal on your part, Pip,’ said Joe, ‘and it is as such received and grateful welcome, though never looked for, far nor near nor nowheres. And now, old chap,’ said Joe, conveying to me a sensation, first of burning and then of freezing, for I felt as if that familiar expression were applied to Miss Havisham; ‘and now, old chap, may we do our duty! May you and me do our duty, both on us by one and another, and by them which your liberal present – have – conweyed – to be – for the satisfaction of mind – of – them
as never—’ here Joe showed that he felt he had fallen into frightful difficulties, until he triumphantly rescued himself with the words, ‘and from myself far be it!’ These words had such a round and convincing sound for him that he said them twice.

Manifestation Challenges

Some things the Queen of Pentacles reversed and the King of Swords upright have in common are themes of separation, of isolation from others, and of holding oneself separate, whether it’s conscious, or unconsciously done (Pollack). And it makes sense if you think about it. Upright, the Queen of Pentacles is immersed in the abundance and landscape and other beings around her. If you reverse that concept, she would be separate.

King Swords Radiant
Radiant Rider Waite

The King of Swords doesn’t even need to be reversed to voice this message – this King is already arguably the most aloof of all the Kings of the Tarot. Sadly, the Radiant Rider Waite deck seems to cut the two birds of duality out of the King of Swordssky that the original Rider deck features. Because when discussing this separateness in terms of the King of Swords card, Rachel Pollack points out that:

“if the birds symbolize the mind’s ability to climb above the world they also symbolize the remoteness such an attitude can produce.”

One of the most common mistakes Light Workers sometimes make is one of becoming so immersed in the Spirit world or in our other origins that we do indeed become too disconnected from the Physical realm of this Earth, and from all the other energetic beings that reside in it with us. We forget that we are here for a reason – whatever our particular reason may be. And when we have forgotten our reason for being here, and allowed ourselves to become this disconnected from our environment, then we cease doing the work we came to do in the first place.

king of swords rider
Original Rider card

We work really hard, using the power of our mental faculties, to achieve some measure of control of our individual worlds – and this very act of raising our focus above the mud and fray also sometimes raises us too far away from the very people and planet we wish to serve. Besides the fact of this remoteness sabotaging any personal manifestation work we may be doing. In the end, we serve no one, not even ourselves, when we isolate ourselves too much from this world.

Because Pollack also says that the Queen of Pentacles reversed speaks of being so disconnected from the material world around you, that you are unable to enjoy the blessings and prosperity of the same, and unable to even perceive them sometimes, much less enjoy them. If you look at the card reversed, you will also see the rabbit featuring very prominently at the top and upside down – like fertility turned on its head. If one is working on manifesting abundance in one’s life … well, you see how this energy could create a problem with that goal.

One of the first, most fundamental building blocks of manifestation in the physical realm is the ability to, and practice of, FEELING and APPRECIATING all the wonderful things that are already around you, instead of focusing on what you feel should be there and isn’t yet. All the affirmations and reprogramming in the world will not replace this fundamental building block; it is one that MUST be tended to, consciously, every day.

If you see the Queen of Pentacles reversed come up for you in a reading, and especially in readings concerning physical prosperity, this may be the message she is relaying.

See that rabbit??? Check out that rabbit!!! I can almost see the money falling out of its ears and away from us lol! Like a piggy bank being emptied into a hole in the ground!

And if you see this Queen reversed and clarified by the King of Swords – there is a STRONG possibility these are the messages they are trying to relay to you.

If you would like to rectify the situation, Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom suggests these  steps to get back in touch with your environment and fellow earth beings:

  1. Meditate with the Queen of Pentacles upright, to reconnect with her positive attributes.
  2. Ground / Connect with the simple pleasures and satisfying chores of the natural world
    I would add from myself:
  • Make time and efforts to socialize even just a little. Do something that gets you out and interacting with other people.
God help me if anyone that actually knows me reads this; I will never hear the end of it. But I am working on this too. I’m finally going to Tarot Tuesdays every  month, and I may even start hitting a Reiki share that’s also once a month. And going from office work to retail sales has put me back in touch with humanity in a REAL hurry! And I am loving that, but don’t tell anyone. (Cricket’s mom is doing similar).

I just thought that these two cards together carry a really important reminder for many of us in our spiritual journies. Especially if we are doing manifestation work. It never occurred to me before looking into this pairing, that an attitude of separateness could impact abundance manifestation work. But it makes real sense that it would. Something to look out for and be aware of. It would be a shame for anyone to do so much hard manifestation practice only to hit a wall because they forgot to open their eyes and look around them once in a while to appreciate what and who is already in front of them..

Make sense?

Conflicted: the Knight of Wands

This card may surprise you, because its not a card traditionally associated with feelings of conflict. That being said, its a card I have come to personally associate with those things. I think I first interpreted it this way for a client’s reading, but then later realized it applies to me with regard to certain things in my psyche as well.

knight wands radiant
Radiant Rider Waite

It’s because of the conflict between the horse and its rider, the Knight. The horse is more than ready to go; the Knight not so much. The Knight is reining the horse in. The horse is fighting it.

In my personal life, this applies to my journey through healing and learning to work around and work with, PTSD from various sources. And even to normal grief work. I tend to want things to be accomplished faster than they sometimes can. And when I push myself too hard or too fast, it backlashes on me and I end up struggling unnecessarily. I am learning to maintain a better balance in that.

Some interesting imagery in the Rider Waite version of this card, which is the deck and the card I am basing this interpretation on, is the desert sand the Knight is traveling. Perhaps the horse is eager to get where he is going because the land is so barren here. Maybe he wants to get to where things can be planted, and grow, rather than just be moved through. But what the horse maybe doesn’t realize, is that all that barren brownness is also soothing to the eye and thus to the mind as well. Because there’s nothing to be done there but just keep moving, and appreciating the moment … there’s no additional stress to be endured. It’s just a relaxing walk or journey. Or can be, if permitted. Maybe they need to REST more than they need to DO.

Perhaps this is just an area of land that happens to be part of the journey to where the Knight and horse want to go, and it just has to be tolerated in order to get there. And there’s no use fighting it.

There’s also the point that, in a desert, where water can be far and few between, it’s probably a better idea to pace oneself rather than gallop full out and then fall down exhausted with nothing left and still far from water and rest. It is possible the Knight knows this and the horse needs to just trust him. Or at least trust his higher knowledge.

The Knight is carrying his wand with new growth in it. He’s got what he needs for when he gets where he is going. And the Orion pyramids are behind him, watching over his journey. Maybe he doesn’t need to rush so much. Maybe Time is exactly what is needed, and the desert affords and gifts that to them.

When I pull this card in answer to what’s going on with my Depression, Anxiety, or PTSD, it’s usually a call to slow down and stop pushing myself too hard or fast. And to not fall into the trap of thinking I have to take all action RIGHT NOW. To remember that it’s okay to let things unfold in their own time. To remember that I’m safer than I feel I am.

That there will be plenty of time later, to be here: knight swords radiant

Drama, Much?

So I”m upstairs on my hands and knees (not as exciting as it first sounds) scrubbing away at the Revenge Pooper’s (a whollllllle OTHER blogpost!) latest “SPOT” on the rug …

And I’m NOT happy about it.

This is like his 10th non-acccident.

I hate my house, family, pets, and life.

Fuck My Life, btw.

I stop to take a break and text my girlfriend of forty years Tamara Perrin Florea in Ohio.

“Do you ever wonder if maybe we are ghosts and that’s why no matter how much we clean, or how many times we clean the same thing, it never gets clean, ever? It just stays messy? If we are ghosts that would also explain why no one (kids, husbands, pets, whoever you have around you) ever HEARS us too! Maybe we’ve died but just don’t know it because cleaning is all we know and we don’t know how to stop???”

This, my friends, is the Ten of Swords energy.

The Ten of Swords can be about death and endings, but sometimes it’s just about so much drama, or so much more drama than is necessary.

Please note the TEN swords this person has been stabbed in the back with, as opposed to the ONE that would have done the trick just as easily!

So the next time you’re doing something you despise doing and you feel really, really, sorry for yourself and bitter about doing it?

You’re communing with this Tarot card’s energy!

Disclaimer: no humans were hurt during this blog post, and I felt better the minute I texted my girlfriend. I felt so good I left the rest of the nefarious “spot” for another day, bought some moscato coolers, and called it a day!

Tarot’s Not the Only Guidance Out There

“Learning to Pray”
taken from Treasury of Prayer: Prayers of Hope and Faith

by Marjorie Holmes

You know, Lord, how well You know, the years when I didn’t pray (or didn’t think I prayed). How could I pray to someone whose very existence I doubted? How could I ask for help from a force I spurned?
Yet all the while I was hungering for You, groping to find Your hand as I stumbled in the darkness of my needs . . . “If I could pray,” I thought. “If I could only learn to pray.”
But I felt foolish when I tried; I felt phony, insincere. My doubts seemed to rise up like a mockery between us. And You knew my follies and faults all too well. My tongue was inarticulate – it winced to form the words. My own self-scorn made me impotent, dumb.
I would get up from my fumbling so called prayers with an empty heart, feeling rejected, turned away. (Was there some secret rubric others had discovered? Some key that would make the heavens open, unlock the special doors?)

I was wrong. In a while, maybe from sheer persistence, something began to happen within me. A sense of being accepted, however unworthy. (no -not merely accepted, welcome, welcomed home!) And the deep excited stirrings of trust in a power I could not see.

Then I went to the formula You gave in the Sermon on the Mount.
“Our Father who are in heaven.” How kind that seems. “Hallowed be Thy name.” The gentle beginnings of worship . . .

“Thy kingdom come” (within me). “Thy will be done” (take over my life, I”m not doing so well) “on earth as it is in heaven.” (I like this earth. I don’t know about heaven, but it must be a wonderful place.)

“Give us this day our daily bread” (just enough for today, Lord, enough time and money and strength to get through this one day) . . . “and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive” (are my trespasses blocking the road to You? and my lack of forgiveness for those who’ve hurt me?).

“Lead us not into temptation” (this I don’t understand – You couldn’t, You wouldn’t – just hang on to me when I am tempted, give me the will not to yield). “Deliver us from evil” (yes, yes, that’s what I mean – deliverance).

“For Thine is the power and the glory forever and ever.” (It is, it is, it hast to be, and the more often I admit it, express it, the more I know it’s true!)
So in this way I began to get deliverance, Lord. The deliverance I sought. From self-doubt, which was so deeply enmeshed with my doubts of You.

And to learn the fundamentals of prayer: worship, submission, acceptance, plea, and then more worship to seal it. And I began to know then as I realize now that worship itself is the key. The magic key. Prayer brings You close when we come not merely seeking help, but because we want to be with You.

“Prayer of Praise”
by Saint Augustine

But let my soul praise Thee that it may love Thee,
And let it tell Thee Thy mercies that it may praise Thee.
Without ceasing Thy whole creation speaks Thy praise-
The spirit of every man by the words that his mouth directs to Thee,
Animals and lifeless matter by the mouth of those who look upon them.
That so our soul rises out of its mortal weariness unto Thee,
Helped upward by the things Thou hast made
And passing beyond them unto Thee who has wonderfully made them:
And there refreshment is and strength unfailing. Amen.

What is the Tarot? My Take

*taken from my Certified Biddy Tarot Application

What is the Tarot? And how does the Tarot work?

Tarot is (in my opinion)a science (as yet unrecognized) that works with the energies within and around us, helping us to access information that may or may not be consciously available to us. Tarot, in this respect, is a tool we use to access information that we seek.

Opinions on where the information comes from differs from belief system to belief system, but most agree that Tarot is a tool that unlocks it.

Tarot can then be used to gather information in order to make decisions where further, more in depth information may be desired … Tarot is a tool that can be used in Self Analysis or Self Help / Self Work, or to walk one’s spiritual path.

ENERGY the one

Physically, Tarot is a deck of cards consisting of images and symbols. Humans can access the information they seek by shuffling and handling the cards … in my belief system our Higher Selves guide where each card falls in the Shuffle. They may also be guided by spirits in the non physical planes in my opinion.

In my opinion, our brains are fully capable of accessing information but most of us are handicapped and cannot access it yet without tools of some kind to trick our consciousness into stepping aside and letting our super conscious and/or subconscious take the reins. It seems to me to be very similar to Dumbo and his feather, also to a young witch using an Athame or a Wand or candles until she learns the magic is within her and she can use her mind.

Dumbo (1).jpg
Disney

The Tarot is not necessary … but it helps us at this point in our evolution. To get past the wall of our enforced societal belief systems that limit us.

Ultimately, it is a key to our subconscious, our Higher Self, the Collective Consciousness, and esoteric information gathered and held by our ancestors.

As a side note, Tarot doesn’t just pick up on higher information. It also picks up on (or rather our hands transmit the information to the cards)… the briefest thought flitting through our minds. Hence, the importance of focus and concentration while shuffling.

I learned this first when I didn’t shuffle with the correct focus for my reader and mentor. (And she said “WHAT ON EARTH WERE YOU THINKING ABOUT WHEN YOU WERE SHUFFLING???”)

I learned it again a few months ago when I was shuffling for a casual question while I had YouTube on in the background. WOW. The cards very accurately reflected the energy of that show that was on. And I wasn’t even paying conscious attention to it. Tarot works with the electromagnetic energy of our very thought waves, however miniscule.

“I’m going on a trip . . . “

* posted with permission

(“I am going on an overseas trip in November and would be grateful for any insight as to how the trip will go.”)

Per our discussion, I’ve used the Biddy Three Card Spread #2: 1. What Will Help You in your Journey’s Goals,2. What Will Hinder You in Your Journey’s Goals, and 3. What is an Unrealized Potential Inherent in this Journey. Here is what came up for you:

Three cards actually fell out of the deck while I was shuffling, one by one. So I stopped shuffling and will go forward with the assumption that these are the three you need to see:

  1. What Will Help You in your Journey’s Goals?
    The Chariot
  2. What Will Hinder You in Your Journey’s Goals?
    Ace of Swords
  3. What is an Unrealized Potential Inherent in this Journey?
    Two of Cups
jim spread test.jpg
(Waite)

The journey itself will help in some way. It seems to be a solution in and of itself. So if the decision to take this trip was a result of an issue or challenge … it would appear that the decision was a good one. Is this a spiritual journey of some kind? A pilgrimage or something, so to speak? Also, are you looking to meet someone romantically while you are abroad? This journey is a beginning of sorts. It’s intent is to begin something.

Over thinking may hinder your goals during this trip (Ace of Swords). It’s dark in this

ace swords radiant.jpg
(Waite)

card, but the sword illuminates the landscape. The crown symbolizes mastery of some kind, which implies domination. So this may not just be speaking of over thinking but also of … I feel like an obsession or obsessive behaviour in trying to accomplish this mastery or goal. This is the second card in your reading, but I felt intuitively drawn to read it first.

I can’t tell if the ground is mountains or waves from an ocean but the phrase “rocky crags” popped into my head when I wondered about it. I feel like this mastery, this goal that you are seeking to accomplish, either has been difficult in attaining in the past or that it will be challenging in the present and future. Or both. “It has not been easy,” comes to mind. But the light from the Divine hand wielding the sword actually touches this ground, it comes into direct contact with some of it, or at least appears to. So – there will be  – some sort of comfort and assistance along the way. It will be “softened” for you. The way will be softened for you.

It is possible this can also mean in a literal sense, that your journey will literally have some bumps along the way, but that they will be mitigated by some outside force or persons.

Chariot radiant
(Waite)

What will help – as I said, the journey itself is the biggest help in the achievement of your goals at this time. The decision to take the journey is invaluable to the pursuit of your goals. The man in this card (the Chariot) wears a crown very similar to the one in the Ace of Swords, even down to the garland woven into it. (The people in the Two of Cups also have garlands on their heads).  The mastery you strive so hard for in the Ace of Swords – it is possible you already possess it, or more of it than you believe. It is possible that the “over thinking” I picked up on in that card is referring to a redundant thinking or acting. You may be striving for a mastery you already possess. Keep this in mind. Have you stopped to assess where you are in your goals since you first started working towards them? It is possible you are further along than you think.

There may also be a competitiveness in your personality … that is both a strength and a weakness. It will be up to you to maintain a balance that will help that trait to help you, rather than hinder you. It shows up in both these cards so  right now it is both helping and hindering your cause. You may do well to  meditate or think about which ways your drive and competitiveness assist you closer to your goals, and which ways you would do better to rein them in at times. Again, this will be on you to do. This isn’t something anyone else can do for you.

The person in the Chariot has already conquered much; you can see it in the city behind him. And now he is (you are) on your way to the next challenge. You are balanced in your drive for the most part, just keep it in mind to make sure it stays that way. You’re very success driven.

2 cups radiant
(Waite)

After reading the first two cards, I feel like this card (Two of Cups)represents the balancing act I spoke of earlier. Balancing your competitiveness as both your weakness and your strength. Balancing your self esteem with actual reality of what you’ve accomplished and what you deserve to reward yourself for, or at least sit for  a moment and pat yourself on the back.

The winged lion in this card mirrors the winged sphere in the Chariot, the symbol that flies at the front of the Chariot as if it’s a proclamation of who the person is, or what he stands for. It’s like a masthead or a coat of arms, or a flag, similar to those things. It’s a symbol of where you are. Given this symbol’s position in both cards, it seems to be saying that you will find success in whatever you do by keeping the truth of who you are in front of you and over you, guiding all that you do.

As untapped potential, this card represents as I said, the learning curve of your balancing acts. Balancing the inner aspects of your Self towards the attainment of your goals.

So in summary, this is what this journey holds for you.

Things to look out for are over thinking things, wasting time trying to conquer things you have already mastered, watching possible obsessive behaviour patterns, and knowing ahead of time that you may have some rocky ground to navigate, and being ready and willing to take it on. Being sure to balance your competitiveness with what is actually needed to take action on. REWARD yourself for WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED and then LET THE FIGHT FOR THOSE THINGS GO. Lean on the assistance that is offered you. There are crowns, and garlands, and laurels, “halos,” and wings all over these cards. Start taking a look at what you’ve already accomplished and the amazing being that you already are.

Some things that are already helping that you should keep doing: Keep exploring new ground, keep being true to your Self and your goals and values. Keep who you are in front of you at all times.
