Wednesday, January 2

Saturn, the taskmaster of the sky, conjoins the sun today. On the first day back to work after the holiday, reality calls. Don’t let Saturn’s heavy overtones get the best of you. Instead, sit quietly and listen to the voice of truth emerging within. On a more practical note, be sure to wash your hands, drink warm fluids, eat nutrient-dense blood-sugar-balancing meals, and get plenty of rest. Saturn’s influence might contribute to a sense of feeling run-down, which could lead to getting sick. So, take it easy and prioritize your health.

Coming off of a streak of holiday indulgences, you might even want to go deeper. Beyond the basics of proper immune system support, you may feel called to support hormonal health with a complete overhaul of your diet, too. Yes, those extra glasses of wine and cookies last month might create a hormone hangover this month. Taking sensible herbs and supplements, reducing sugar intake, eating healthy fats to support your adrenals, getting extra rest, and working out in a way that doesn’t contribute to burning out will facilitate your ability to bounce back from the holidays with greater resilience right now.

Manifestation Challenges

Some things the Queen of Pentacles reversed and the King of Swords upright have in common are themes of separation, of isolation from others, and of holding oneself separate, whether it’s conscious, or unconsciously done (Pollack). And it makes sense if you think about it. Upright, the Queen of Pentacles is immersed in the abundance and landscape and other beings around her. If you reverse that concept, she would be separate.

King Swords Radiant
Radiant Rider Waite

The King of Swords doesn’t even need to be reversed to voice this message – this King is already arguably the most aloof of all the Kings of the Tarot. Sadly, the Radiant Rider Waite deck seems to cut the two birds of duality out of the King of Swordssky that the original Rider deck features. Because when discussing this separateness in terms of the King of Swords card, Rachel Pollack points out that:

“if the birds symbolize the mind’s ability to climb above the world they also symbolize the remoteness such an attitude can produce.”

One of the most common mistakes Light Workers sometimes make is one of becoming so immersed in the Spirit world or in our other origins that we do indeed become too disconnected from the Physical realm of this Earth, and from all the other energetic beings that reside in it with us. We forget that we are here for a reason – whatever our particular reason may be. And when we have forgotten our reason for being here, and allowed ourselves to become this disconnected from our environment, then we cease doing the work we came to do in the first place.

Original Rider card

We work really hard, using the power of our mental faculties, to achieve some measure of control of our individual worlds – and this very act of raising our focus above the mud and fray also sometimes raises us too far away from the very people and planet we wish to serve. Besides the fact of this remoteness sabotaging any personal manifestation work we may be doing. In the end, we serve no one, not even ourselves, when we isolate ourselves too much from this world.

Because Pollack also says that the Queen of Pentacles reversed speaks of being so disconnected from the material world around you, that you are unable to enjoy the blessings and prosperity of the same, and unable to even perceive them sometimes, much less enjoy them. If you look at the card reversed, you will also see the rabbit featuring very prominently at the top and upside down – like fertility turned on its head. If one is working on manifesting abundance in one’s life … well, you see how this energy could create a problem with that goal.

One of the first, most fundamental building blocks of manifestation in the physical realm is the ability to, and practice of, FEELING and APPRECIATING all the wonderful things that are already around you, instead of focusing on what you feel should be there and isn’t yet. All the affirmations and reprogramming in the world will not replace this fundamental building block; it is one that MUST be tended to, consciously, every day.

If you see the Queen of Pentacles reversed come up for you in a reading, and especially in readings concerning physical prosperity, this may be the message she is relaying.

See that rabbit??? Check out that rabbit!!! I can almost see the money falling out of its ears and away from us lol! Like a piggy bank being emptied into a hole in the ground!

And if you see this Queen reversed and clarified by the King of Swords – there is a STRONG possibility these are the messages they are trying to relay to you.

If you would like to rectify the situation, Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom suggests these  steps to get back in touch with your environment and fellow earth beings:

  1. Meditate with the Queen of Pentacles upright, to reconnect with her positive attributes.
  2. Ground / Connect with the simple pleasures and satisfying chores of the natural world
    I would add from myself:
  • Make time and efforts to socialize even just a little. Do something that gets you out and interacting with other people.
God help me if anyone that actually knows me reads this; I will never hear the end of it. But I am working on this too. I’m finally going to Tarot Tuesdays every  month, and I may even start hitting a Reiki share that’s also once a month. And going from office work to retail sales has put me back in touch with humanity in a REAL hurry! And I am loving that, but don’t tell anyone. (Cricket’s mom is doing similar).

I just thought that these two cards together carry a really important reminder for many of us in our spiritual journies. Especially if we are doing manifestation work. It never occurred to me before looking into this pairing, that an attitude of separateness could impact abundance manifestation work. But it makes real sense that it would. Something to look out for and be aware of. It would be a shame for anyone to do so much hard manifestation practice only to hit a wall because they forgot to open their eyes and look around them once in a while to appreciate what and who is already in front of them..

Make sense?

Most-Famous 20th-Century Tarot Deck Features Death’s Banner Emblazened with the White Rose of the House of York

White Rose of the House of York White Rose of the House of York

The Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot Deck (RWS) is arguably the most famous of 20th-century Tarot decks. For decades, I’ve been using the RWS as an aid to developing fictional characters. Only recently did I notice the Death card in the Major Arcana features a skeletal knight carrying a banner on which is imprinted the White Rose of the House of York. As far as I can tell, the image of the Yorkist Rose does not appear on any Tarot deck – medieval or modern – preceding the RWS.

Who Designed the RWS?

Arthur Edward Waite (2 October 1857 – 19 May 1942), commonly known as A. E. Waite, was an American-born British poet and scholarly mystic who wrote extensively on Masonic, occult and esoteric matters. Coincidentally or not, he shared the same day of birth as Richard III…

Conflicted: the Knight of Wands

This card may surprise you, because its not a card traditionally associated with feelings of conflict. That being said, its a card I have come to personally associate with those things. I think I first interpreted it this way for a client’s reading, but then later realized it applies to me with regard to certain things in my psyche as well.

knight wands radiant
Radiant Rider Waite

It’s because of the conflict between the horse and its rider, the Knight. The horse is more than ready to go; the Knight not so much. The Knight is reining the horse in. The horse is fighting it.

In my personal life, this applies to my journey through healing and learning to work around and work with, PTSD from various sources. And even to normal grief work. I tend to want things to be accomplished faster than they sometimes can. And when I push myself too hard or too fast, it backlashes on me and I end up struggling unnecessarily. I am learning to maintain a better balance in that.

Some interesting imagery in the Rider Waite version of this card, which is the deck and the card I am basing this interpretation on, is the desert sand the Knight is traveling. Perhaps the horse is eager to get where he is going because the land is so barren here. Maybe he wants to get to where things can be planted, and grow, rather than just be moved through. But what the horse maybe doesn’t realize, is that all that barren brownness is also soothing to the eye and thus to the mind as well. Because there’s nothing to be done there but just keep moving, and appreciating the moment … there’s no additional stress to be endured. It’s just a relaxing walk or journey. Or can be, if permitted. Maybe they need to REST more than they need to DO.

Perhaps this is just an area of land that happens to be part of the journey to where the Knight and horse want to go, and it just has to be tolerated in order to get there. And there’s no use fighting it.

There’s also the point that, in a desert, where water can be far and few between, it’s probably a better idea to pace oneself rather than gallop full out and then fall down exhausted with nothing left and still far from water and rest. It is possible the Knight knows this and the horse needs to just trust him. Or at least trust his higher knowledge.

The Knight is carrying his wand with new growth in it. He’s got what he needs for when he gets where he is going. And the Orion pyramids are behind him, watching over his journey. Maybe he doesn’t need to rush so much. Maybe Time is exactly what is needed, and the desert affords and gifts that to them.

When I pull this card in answer to what’s going on with my Depression, Anxiety, or PTSD, it’s usually a call to slow down and stop pushing myself too hard or fast. And to not fall into the trap of thinking I have to take all action RIGHT NOW. To remember that it’s okay to let things unfold in their own time. To remember that I’m safer than I feel I am.

That there will be plenty of time later, to be here: knight swords radiant

But that’s for another whole blog post.)

Thoughts welcome from you readers out there! And what does the Knight of Wands mean the most, to YOU?

8 Days Til Christmas: The Advent Wreath from the Lutherans in Germany

Inspired by Yule: A Celebration of Light and Warmth by Dorothy Morrisonyule

Morrison’s book says the Advent Wreath “initially came from the Lutherans,” which I found to be very cool be cause that is the first church I can remember attending, as well as that is the church that I was confirmed in.

As she explains, the wreath is traditionally made of evergreen and has four candles arranged at each “side” of it. Four Sundays out from Christmas the church has someone light a candle, and one is lit each Sunday until Christmas occurs.

***

Something I did NOT know, and which was not in Morrison’s book (due to space considerations), was that the candle is supposed to burn all week long, “to welcome the Light of the world” (capitalization mine). I guess they can’t really do that now (and would they even have done it in the beginning?) due to safety issues, but that is a really nice tradition to think of. One source says that the very first Advent wreath had “twenty small red candles and four large white candles” in it (Richie). A Lutheran minister had made it for the kids to count down to Christmas. The little red candles were lit on the weekdays while the big white ones were the Sunday candles. But I still can’t imagine they would just leave them burning the entire day.

In present time the German colors are usually red for the four big candles, and sometimes a fifth white one in the middle to represent the birth of Christ, though colors sometimes vary according to different traditions. North American Lutherans use violets and blues and whites.

This is supposed to be a traditional German advent wreath:

And something else that Morrison doesn’t go into detail about is the symbolism of the individual candles themselves, which I REALLY think is cool:

  • The first candle symbolizes hope and is called the “Prophet’s Candle.” The prophets of the Old Testament, especially Isaiah, waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival.
  • The second candle represents faith and is called “Bethlehem’s Candle.” Micah had foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, which is also the birthplace of King David.
  • The third candle symbolizes joy and is called the “Shepherd’s Candle.” To the shepherd’s great joy, the angels announced that Jesus came for humble, unimportant people like them, too. In liturgy, the color rose signifies joy.
  • The fourth candle represents peace and is called the “Angel’s Candle.” The angels announced that Jesus came to bring peace–He came to bring people close to God and to each other again.
  • The (optional) fifth candle represents light and purity and is called “Christ’s candle.” It is placed in the middle and is lit on Christmas Day.

(Richie)

Right from the Source’s Mouth, St. Matthews Lutheran Church, is an explanation of the Advent season itself as well as a much more poetic description of the candle meanings. Check it out if you get a chance.

When I was little, it was exciting as a child to see each additional candle get lit and then when all four were burning, we knew Christmas was near!

So, Thank You to the Lutheran branch of Christianity, for this awesome Christmas tradition!

Drama, Much?

So I”m upstairs on my hands and knees (not as exciting as it first sounds) scrubbing away at the Revenge Pooper’s (a whollllllle OTHER blogpost!) latest “SPOT” on the rug …

And I’m NOT happy about it.

woman cleaning living room table with cloth and spray bottle tired in stress

This is like his 10th non-acccident.

I hate my house, family, pets, and life.

Fuck My Life, btw.

I stop to take a break and text my girlfriend of forty years Tamara Perrin Florea in Ohio.

“Do you ever wonder if maybe we are ghosts and that’s why no matter how much we clean, or how many times we clean the same thing, it never gets clean, ever? It just stays messy? If we are ghosts that would also explain why no one (kids, husbands, pets, whoever you have around you) ever HEARS us too! Maybe we’ve died but just don’t know it because cleaning is all we know and we don’t know how to stop???”

This, my friends, is the Ten of Swords energy.

The Ten of Swords can be about death and endings, but sometimes it’s just about so much drama, or so much more drama than is necessary.

Please note the TEN swords this person has been stabbed in the back with, as opposed to the ONE that would have done the trick just as easily!

So the next time you’re doing something you despise doing and you feel really, really, sorry for yourself and bitter about doing it?

You’re communing with this Tarot card’s energy!

Disclaimer: no humans were hurt during this blog post, and I felt better the minute I texted my girlfriend. I felt so good I left the rest of the nefarious “spot” for another day, bought some moscato coolers, and called it a day!

Tarot’s Not the Only Guidance Out There

“Learning to Pray”
taken from Treasury of Prayer: Prayers of Hope and Faith

by Marjorie Holmes

You know, Lord, how well You know, the years when I didn’t pray (or didn’t think I prayed). How could I pray to someone whose very existence I doubted? How could I ask for help from a force I spurned?
Yet all the while I was hungering for You, groping to find Your hand as I stumbled in the darkness of my needs . . . “If I could pray,” I thought. “If I could only learn to pray.”
But I felt foolish when I tried; I felt phony, insincere. My doubts seemed to rise up like a mockery between us. And You knew my follies and faults all too well. My tongue was inarticulate – it winced to form the words. My own self-scorn made me impotent, dumb.
I would get up from my fumbling so called prayers with an empty heart, feeling rejected, turned away. (Was there some secret rubric others had discovered? Some key that would make the heavens open, unlock the special doors?)

I was wrong. In a while, maybe from sheer persistence, something began to happen within me. A sense of being accepted, however unworthy. (no -not merely accepted, welcome, welcomed home!) And the deep excited stirrings of trust in a power I could not see.

Then I went to the formula You gave in the Sermon on the Mount.
“Our Father who are in heaven.” How kind that seems. “Hallowed be Thy name.” The gentle beginnings of worship . . .

“Thy kingdom come” (within me). “Thy will be done” (take over my life, I”m not doing so well) “on earth as it is in heaven.” (I like this earth. I don’t know about heaven, but it must be a wonderful place.)

“Give us this day our daily bread” (just enough for today, Lord, enough time and money and strength to get through this one day) . . . “and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive” (are my trespasses blocking the road to You? and my lack of forgiveness for those who’ve hurt me?).

“Lead us not into temptation” (this I don’t understand – You couldn’t, You wouldn’t – just hang on to me when I am tempted, give me the will not to yield). “Deliver us from evil” (yes, yes, that’s what I mean – deliverance).

“For Thine is the power and the glory forever and ever.” (It is, it is, it hast to be, and the more often I admit it, express it, the more I know it’s true!)
So in this way I began to get deliverance, Lord. The deliverance I sought. From self-doubt, which was so deeply enmeshed with my doubts of You.

And to learn the fundamentals of prayer: worship, submission, acceptance, plea, and then more worship to seal it. And I began to know then as I realize now that worship itself is the key. The magic key. Prayer brings You close when we come not merely seeking help, but because we want to be with You.

“Prayer of Praise”
by Saint Augustine

But let my soul praise Thee that it may love Thee,
And let it tell Thee Thy mercies that it may praise Thee.
Without ceasing Thy whole creation speaks Thy praise-
The spirit of every man by the words that his mouth directs to Thee,
Animals and lifeless matter by the mouth of those who look upon them.
That so our soul rises out of its mortal weariness unto Thee,
Helped upward by the things Thou hast made
And passing beyond them unto Thee who has wonderfully made them:
And there refreshment is and strength unfailing. Amen.
